Life in a Fishbowl Interactive Activity for Students Grades K-2

Life in a Fishbowl is an interactive activity designed for students in Grades K-2.

Activity Overview:

Fish and other water organisms need oxygen to live.  Pollutants take away the oxygen in water that these organisms need.  Thus the more pollutants there are, the less likely fish will survive.  A few pollutants that can be found in Alabama’s rivers, lakes, and streams are detergent, motor oils, and fertilizer.  This activity will let students see the effects pollutants and a lack of oxygen can have on fish.

Edible Aquifer Interactive Activity for 4th Graders

Edible Aquifer Interactive Activity for 4th Graders.

Activity Overview:

The yummy activity provides a fun opportunity for 4th graders to learn about the concept of aquifers, surface/groundwater contamination and protection from herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, litter and other pollutants.  It also includes some review of the water cycle, hazardous waste management and geology.  This is a versatile activity that is appropriate for large or small groups of children in a classroom, lab, or outdoor/indoor education al festival environment.

If you would like for Storm Water to come to your school, event, or organization and demonstrate this activity to 4th graders, please call our education staff at 205.943.1943 or email us at education@swma.com.

Fantastic Filtration Hands-on Activity for 4th Graders

Fantastic Filtration Interactive Hands-On Activity for 4th Graders.

This interactive hands-on activity will demonstrate how various pollutants such as litter, dirt and soil, chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, and oil and grease from cars, enter our water supply via nature or man.  The students will use various filtering techniques to try and remove these pollutants from water.  They will find that some pollutants can be removed by filters and must be treated chemically or otherwise and they will find that some pollutants cannot be removed and the water supply is no longer useable.  This is a versatile activity that is appropriate for large or small groups of students in a classroom, lab, or outdoor/indoor educational festival environment.

If you would like for Storm Water to come to your school, event, or organization and demonstrate this activity to 4th graders, please call our education staff at 205.943.1943 or email us at education@swma.com.

EnviroScape® Interactive Hands-On Activity

Enviroscape ® Interactive Hands-on Activity

Activity Overview

This 3-D model EnviroScape® is an educational demonstration designed for audiences of all ages and different levels of knowledge.  This tabletop model provides a 3-D representation of a variety of sources of non-point source pollution (storm water pollution) such as herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, litter, dirt, hazardous materials, automobile runoff, sewage, pet wastes, and lawn debris.  The objective of an EnviroScape® demonstration is that the audience gains an understanding of how human activities can affect our streams, rivers, and lakes.  It also serves to facilitate a basic understanding of certain aspects of hydrology—the interface of land and water.

The demonstration will illustrate residential, recreational, agricultural, industrial and transportation areas -- all representing possible sources of water pollution. Children and adults learn by using chemicals (drink mix) and loose soil (cocoa) throughout a typical community to see how their actions and those of others may affect our water quality. EnviroScape® actually emphasizes pollution prevention with a follow-up demonstration that shows how to prevent such pollution through the use of best management practices.

If you would like for Storm Water to come to your school, event, or organization and demonstrate this activity to 4th graders, please call our education staff at 205.943.1943 or email us at education@swma.com.

Water Jeopardy! Interactive Game

Water Jeopardy! Interactive Activity

Activity Overview

Water Jeopardy! is a fun and interactive question and answer game where students divide up into separate groups competing for prizes.  The game is similar to the TV game show “Jeopardy!” where contestants choose to answer questions from a range of topics with varying degrees of difficulty.  All of the topics are associated with hydrologic concepts like the water cycle.  Each group works together to come up with correct answers.  Each right answer is worth a certain prize (e.g. number of Tootsie Rolls).  The group that has the most prizes wins the game.  The audience always leaves with a smile and some knowledge about hydrology.

If you would like for Storm Water to come to your school, event, or organization and demonstrate this activity to 4th graders, please call our education staff at 205.943.1943 or email us at education@swma.com.

Erosion and Sedimentation Control Workshop

This workshop is designed for homebuilders, developers, grading contractors, etc.  It will provide training on the proper installation and usage of BMPs (Best Management Practices.) We have invited vendors to demonstrate the installation and usage of different erosion control devices.  Storm Water Management Authority, Inc. (SWMA) encourages all grading contractors to attend this workshop.

Once you have completed the workshop, you will receive a SWMA Certification, which is good for one year.  The advantage of possessing this certification is that you will not be required to post a surety with SWMA when applying for a SWMA Land Disturbance Activity Permit for a Single Family residence.  The workshops currently available are a Basic Certification Workshop and a Recertification workshop.  The Recertification workshop is for persons who have already completed the Basic Certification.  (It is necessary for everyone to continue attending the workshops to keep their certification current.  If it has been over a year since you attended a workshop or your certification is about to expire, you will need to attend the recertification workshop.)

Both workshops are offered twice a year: October and April. Please refer to the Calendar of Events for specific workshop dates.

The workshop fee is $30 (includes lunch).  Please make checks payable to SWMA and please note on the check a daytime phone number, the specific workshop date, and the name of the registrant(s) for which the payment is made.  NOTE: With each class there is a registration deadline.  We ask that you adhere to this deadline so that the appropriate number of seats and food/drinks available for all participants.

The registration form is available to download.  If you need a copy mailed or faxed to you, please call our office at 205.943.1941 and ask to be sent an Erosion and Sedimentation Workshop Registration Form.

SWMA is located at
